War and Peace

We are all aware of Washington’s comment that we should be strong so as to avoid war, and to deal with all but form binds with none. Clearly we have failed to follow his advise. This can be good or bad, depending on one’s viewpoint. There are, however, some important issues to be hashed out before we can stand cleanly and decide what exactly we want of us and the world.

Political theory has for some time contended that kings rule for their own aggrandizement, and not that of the people. This is the heart of the whole concept that the king rules by divine provenance, when in point of fact he rules by his own ambition and grip on the reins of power. If we conclude this, … Continue reading

Taxes – and Other Forms of Larceny

Generally speaking, when someone compels you to give up your money, it is considered illegal and the miscreant is prosecuted by the law. This is true for armed robbery, robbery, burglary, theft, fraud. All are forms of illicit taking of one’s money.

Except the government. When the government takes your money, it is claimed to be a big civic virtue. It is good. It is “healthy” – or “fair”, whatever that terms means. Excuses for taking your money abound. The oldest one is, “?How else would the government be able to do anything.” Indeed, the Articles of Confederation did have one glaring weakness – they lacked any form of the government being able to fund its activity.

The progressive side of the ledger will attempt to argue that … Continue reading

The First Finnish Finish

Sunday was the 4th of the 20 races in F1 this season. It was held in Socchi, Russia, which has turned into quite an athletic locale. It is actively working to host a whole host (?see what I did there) of games and contests, including soccer, basketball – and a world F1.

This is the 3rd year Sochi has been the site of a F1 race. The previous 2 were all Mercedes, with the silver cars holding the front row and Lewis Hamilton winning both races. But the season to date has held promise of new competition and so it was at Sochi.

For the first time since 2006 I believe Ferrari held the front row, Sebastien Vettel qualifying for the pole and his teammate, the Finn Kimi … Continue reading

Korea – Land of Opportunity

The Korean people have a long and distinguished history. They have battled their various neighbors for many years, suffering invasions from all about. One might think of them as the Balkan Peninsula of the East.

The Korean “War” was started by Stalin, thinking the West was too war-weary to fight and so presenting a perfect opportunity for expansion. Much to his surprise, Truman fought. Much to a lot of Americans’ surprise, America was again at war. In SO many ways Korea is truly “the forgotten war”. We vets of Vietnam were abused by the Left (our current elite leadership). Korean vets were simply forgotten. No one speaks much of the war, of the sacrifices, of the bravery. One of the best battle books, and I am a great … Continue reading

A Rising Star

Don’t believe any of you here give the UN much strength. It is mostly a collection of people who in a proper world would be in jail. Despite this, they get to pontificate and pronounce upon far more righteous people without fear of retribution. Oh to be able to return to the times of, say, 125 years ago – with modern technology. Be some dead uglies lying about.

So imagine my surprise to note all the goings on these last several months. Nikki Haley has totally tossed the way business is done there. No more mumble, mumble, shall we break for lunch.

Look at some of the things she has done. She began by calling out the Russians over the chem attack in Syria. Then there was the … Continue reading

A Bar In Arizona

Four old retired men are walking down a street in Yuma, Arizona. They turn a corner and see a sign that says, “Old Timers Bar – ALL drinks 10 cents.” They look at each other and then go in, thinking this is too good to be true.

The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, “Come on in and let me pour one for you! What’ll it be, gentlemen?”

There’s a fully stocked bar, so each of the men orders a martini. In no time the bartender serves up four iced martinis shaken, not stirred and says, “That’ll be 10 cents each, please.”

The four guys stare at the bartender for a moment, then at each other. They can’t believe … Continue reading

3 Down – Excitement in the F1 Community

Well, three races are now complete in F1. And what a start to the season.

I probably should note that I am a Lewis Hamilton fan. He is a 3-times world champion, this despite being the #2 driver for Mercedes, behind Nico Rossberg. Last year Nico won the world championship purely by luck. Probably recognizing it isn’t like to recur he then retired after the season.

This year has been altogether different from last year. Last year the Mercedes team pretty much ran off and hid from the rest of the field, and first and second were mostly pretty much set. The rest of the field raced for what was left.

Nothing like that THIS year. In the first race in Melbourne Hamilton won, but in Shangai Sebastian … Continue reading

Off To The Races

Since I am sure all of you are rabid F1 fans, this is probably a totally unenlightening post. (OK. I’ll stop being a smartass.)

F1 season is off to an “interesting” start. LOADS of changes. For those of you who don’t follow/aren’t all that interested/couldn’t care to spend the time, here’s a recap of transpirings.

Last year saw the winning of the car championship by Mercedes (no surprise – they pretty much ran off and hid from all the other teams all year) and the drivers championship won by a truly icky person – Nico Rosberg, son of yet another icky person Keke Rosberg. Father was a nasty piece of work, and son had all the pieces in his corner and STILL won by luck, as his partner … Continue reading

And So It Begins

Charles Murray, in his book, We The People, not only outlines when and with which case we lost our liberties and unchained the federal government, but also proposes a solution. Flat out repealing all the bureaucracy simply won’t work. Too many links and too many depending on all this. The only way is to start cutting back on government power.

Murray’s proposal is to fight EVERY overstepping of authority, EVERY snide bureaucrat thinking HE (or she) had the answer AND authority (EPA just naturally comes to mind) – all the way to federal court.

This, of course, can get expensive. So Murray’s proposal is that rich conservatives and libertarians set up think tank-like organizations dedicated to fighting in court every overstep they can find.

Like this.

This … Continue reading
