POTS and 56K

It did not seem that long ago that I had Plain Old Telephone Service and a 56k modem. I remember when it took minutes to download megabytes of data. That was when you were lucky and it went through. Other times there was a problem and you had to start the process again. Now we have pages that load fast. The old days photos would take maybe 10s of seconds to display.  What takes a minute today would have taken hours before.

Does anyone else have fond memories of the pee-pee-po that the old modems made as they connected to that other computer?

Take two of these, keep Kevin calm, and I will see you in two months

I did my monthly check in on National Review and was stunned.

David French of “I might run for President” fame actually wrote a non derogatory article about the speech in Poland.

Jonah “Can’t buy pants” Goldberg went after those who trash on twitter without listening to the content of what Trump said.

Rich “I am no William Buckley” Lowrey actually decided that Trump is winning the immigration debate.

It took Kevin “Get a U Haul, you white trash scum” Williamson to get things back to normal. Trump, you see is responsible for not having solved the North Korean problem in five months because he tweets.  Had he not tweeted, you see, North Korea would be applying to be the fifty second state after Puerto Rico.

History Never Forgets

Watching the demonstrations in Hamburg and observing the gradual radicalization of the progressive movement as it senses a loss of power in America a few historical parallels emerged for me.

America is threatened , and as the President said so well in Poland, Western Civilization itself is threatened, mostly from within, although it is beset by external foes.

My parents knew the Great Depression first hand, it formed much of their character. For many Americans it loosened the bonds to the American Ideal and sent them looking for other ways, other answers.

Our elites from Joe Kennedy  to Charles Lindbergh to George Bernard Shaw saw the strongman fascism in Europe as a model for the future of humanity.  Many agreed in the 1930s.

Assistant Crack Whores Local 151

You may recall SNL’s Norm MacDonald doing a skit which announced the worst jobs of the year (which was also a thing in real news), and the previous year’s worst job — crack whore — had been bumped from its leading spot by the new year’s worst job — Assistant crack whore.

On a college campus somewhere, goats are taking groundskeepers’ jobs. That’s not the embarrassing part. The embarrassing part is that a union is fighting to disenfranchise the goats. That is what it has come to — the assistant crack whores of the university system are still being priced out of a job.

By ruminants.

On Graphic Discourse

No, not that sort of graphic. This is a family site. I mean using graphics in our text, pictures in our words.

I frequently add graphics to my posts to literally illustrate a point, or provide an ironic counterpoint, or for (say) cheap laughs. There is a great infrastructure to prevent this uncredited and unpaid use of another’s creative effort and execution. This eventually will change. Why? It is elementary, my dear Watson. That which cannot endure will end.

The use of the “Watson” quote above is uncontested — it serves to encapsulate more than the bare meaning of the words, but to provide connotation by dragging along context from another environment. We do this all the time with words, and in our new medium, we will do … Continue reading

No Yoko!

How do you screech “chutzpah” in Japanese? Yoko Ono had herself added as coauthor of the song, Imagine, based on a 1980 statement by John Lennon that he based the song on supposed anti-religious sentiment expressed in in her 1964 book, Grapefruit, which also had a number of passages beginning with “Imagine”.

Less than a decade ago, she threatened action against Paul McCartney for reversing the Lennon-McCartney order on the liner notes for his album, “Back in the U.S.“, which featured Beatles songs on which McCartney was primary or exclusive author and Lennon had acknowledged as such. McCartney took the position: “I think it is fair and accurate for the songs that John declared were mine to carry my name first.

A Worthy Speech

Being a bit insomniac, I watched the President’s speech in Poland  today.

If you have not seen it, I suggest you  spare the 35 minutes.

It defined the spiritual backing of an approach to foreign policy rooted in admiring toughness and freedom and supporting those who embrace them.

He threw down on Germany and the Paris centric obsessed American Europhiles.

He set a tone going into the G20.

He informed Putin America will actively defend Poland while not mentioning that  the first LNG tankers from the US are on their way to Eastern Europe.

He left the impression that “This is the kind of Europe We will defend”, not the one engaging in globalist suicide.

Ping Spam and The Nail

Please let me know if you see any more ping spam. It should not happen anymore. I had turned off the options for trackbacks on new posts, but that did nothing to turn it off on old posts. Well that’s the label on the check box, and they do not give you another option.
So I turned off pingbacks on every single post, regardless of age. It was simpler that it seemed, but it’s a matter of finding it before you can do it.
Finally, MLH is not on the hook for technical problems. I do not want to wipe out a troublesome class of comments (or whatever) individually, by hand. That just hides the problem and “lets the terrorists win”. Tech problems get tech solutions … Continue reading

A Curmudgeon Smiles

I sense a shift in the Force, as if thousands of empty headed entitled progressive media pundits screamed out and showed their true colors….

Culture wars are won using cultural iconography.

The GOP consultant class has been clueless to this since Lee Atwater.

Coal Miners on stage out rank women in pantsuits with funny hats.

Families of victims of illegal alien criminals out perform street hoods waving Mexican flags.

Diamond and Silk beat Al Sharpton and Maxine Waters hands down.

Now CNN has become the internet thought police and attacked a kid with a Gif.

The Death Star just hit the very wrong target.

You will know the tide is turning when CBS, NBC and ABC all start to distance themselves from CNN.
