Anyone Want to Buy a Headquarters?

It seems the wave of the future is not more but less. Not full but empty. Not fiscally sound but in debt.

How much can you change an institution before it loses its reason for being? When is change needed and when is it important to stand firm?

In the article it stated that there are twice as many Mormons as this type of Episcopalian. That shocked me. Also the ability to accept the most basic of Christian doctrine. If crossing boundaries is the goal why should anyone stay.

Key Roles

I find it fascinating how what person in a film or an organization holds it all together. It is often not the top billed star but a supporting role makes the good great. I remember the old question asked of the conductor, “What is the hardest part to play in the orchestra? Second fiddle.

Here is just a start to get the conversation going.

Get Smart (TV)  Edward Platte, the chief

Star Wars  Alec Guinness, Obi Wan Kenobi

Andy Griffith Show  Don Knotts, Barney Fife (my brother said this)

Star Trek  James Doohan, Scottie

Secretaries in almost any organization.

POTS and 56K

It did not seem that long ago that I had Plain Old Telephone Service and a 56k modem. I remember when it took minutes to download megabytes of data. That was when you were lucky and it went through. Other times there was a problem and you had to start the process again. Now we have pages that load fast. The old days photos would take maybe 10s of seconds to display.  What takes a minute today would have taken hours before.

Does anyone else have fond memories of the pee-pee-po that the old modems made as they connected to that other computer?

In the old days

It is the fourth here. Not many American flags that is for sure. In the old days my parents went to the consulate and have what they could not get in Japan Coca-Cola. Things certainly have changed. Japan has many Coke machines but ironically they sometimes don’t have Cokes in them.

In America when I was growing up there was the Fourth of July picnic. At night there was the fireworks display in the bay that I could see from my house.

What traditions do you remember?

Anyone Replace a Laptop Keyboard?

I can get a usable laptop for a cheap price. The only catch is it needs a new keyboard. It is either an Asus or an Acer. (I can’t remember which one for I get the mixed up all the time.)

From what I have read it just takes removing some screws and disconnecting a cable then putting in the new keyboard. As many of you know what should happen and what does happen can be two different things.

I have done things to desktops but I have never done anything with a laptop. Any good suggestions would be appreciated?

Why Don’t They Understand

The thing with dealing with Trump is everything but everything has already been thrown at him. It is not as if anything more could be worse. People living with glass jaws should not throw punches.

I don’t know if I agree with Trump’s approach but he does go for the “jugular”. He sets up the image of weakness in his opponents. They look foolish when they react and prove his point. They never think of just laughing it off in not a sneering way but in a big way.

One must remember like the old joke about the two guys in the woods confronted with a bear. One went down and tied his shoes while the other said, “No one can outrun a bear.” He responded, “Yes, but … Continue reading

McEnroe Test

John McEnroe got into trouble for not calling Serena Williams the best tennis player in the world. He called her the best female tennis player but that was not enough for NPR. I am for equality. Let the women become part of the men’s league. Tennis and golf are great sports to try this experiment.

The Root of All Evil

I was listening to Dinesh D’Souza responding to someone when he broke down that the left’s main binding force is economics. Their belief always comes down to money. They love the stuff. They believe if you spread it around you will solve problems. On the surface this seems plausible. With things money is a magical panacea. You lose a car. Money can get you a new car. You need to build a bridge. Money will get that bridge built. Unfortunately people are not cars or bridges.

With people it takes more than money. In fact with certain people money can be like leprosy. Leprosy as I understand it causes such problems because it takes the pain away that keeps us out of trouble. People injure themselves without knowing … Continue reading
