How does one fairly label people?
Does a person become part of a group by saying they are part of a group or do they become part of the group by actually following the positions of the group? For example when does a person stop being part of the Conservative, Libertarian, Liberal, or [your pick ism]? Do we need to add adjectives to delineate between the groups?
If say 10% of the group does terrible things can you say the whole group is like this? (Especially if the larger part of the group does not denounce them.) If say 10% is good can the whole group claim goodness?
I like this story for death defying logic.
http://www.christianpost.com/news/atheist-minister-continues-fight-to-remain-ordained-in-united-church-of-canada-142493/
A minister of a church in Canada is an avowed atheist but still wants to pastor a church. I wonder if an avowed theist can be the head of an atheist group. I was on record telling Claire in a comment that if she voted for Hillary shouldn’t she resign from a Conservative web site. She never answered in writing.
This is perfect for the category: You can’t make this xxx up. As for Claire, well nobody seems to care anymore. She quit pestering the illuminati at R.
Eh? What’s this?
Hmmm. I think there is no one right answer in all cases. In the case of the atheist discussed in the article, it seems there are affirmations to be made before one is to be ordained as a minister of that church, if she, in word and deed has invalidated her affirmation, her ordination should be rescinded. Allowing her to remain ordained in that church would if effect negate the very integrity of the churches ministry.
On the other hand, if she announced herself as an atheist all the way back in 2001, and the church had this information and took no action, imposed sanctions, suspensions, etc. thus allowing her to act as a minister for 16 years after declaring she was an atheist, well, they in effect pooped in their own bed, so expelling her from their ministry will get messy.
semi-Final answer: you are a member of a group when you affirm and abide by the core/foundational beliefs of the group. Open to having my mind changed, just remember I am a bit bullheaded about things once I think I know what I think. :)
you are a member of a group when you affirm and abide by the core/foundational beliefs of the group.
What’s this say about the caf?
CAF? Are we talking Confederation of African Football? Chicago Architecture Foundation? Probably not.
Good golly, again MLH, you stump me. :) Not sure what CAF you are referencing. Help me out. Thanks.
It is the Cafeteria that for the price of a Starbuck’s Latte you can sit and talk. :-)
Oh. It just took me a couple of hours to figure out the what “I think” you are asking MLH. Yes a couple of hours even with 10Cents help. Geez, I surprise even myself sometimes with how slow I can be on the uptake.
If you question was just teasing me, no response is going to be as clever as the question. :) If you are serious, to answer that question… we would need to define the word “member”. (And right now I am thinking, thank goodness, I am not making this statement while sitting in a pit.)
“you are a member of a group when you affirm and abide by the core/foundational beliefs of the group.
What’s this say about the caf?”
MLH, I have come to the conclusion that the people who run The Caf are fairly similar in their views. I think I would be safe to call them CAFe. Over time I think they came up with an “orthodoxy” and “style of thought”. Others are permitted up to a point but are not permitted any offensive weapons. Belittling one side is considered just stating facts whereas belittling the other side is considered personal assaults from wrong thinking for “everyone knows some things are true”.

We will be known by the fruit we bear not our claims.
“We will be known by the fruit we bear not our claims.”
Does this mean I will always be know for pits or The Pit, Brent?
I agree. I always look at what gets done. There are some people you don’t think are too smart but they do get a lot done. Others can’t seem to be able to run “a hot dog stand”.

If yo call yourself a libertarian but support a bunch of statist, utopian programs, then I am justified in calling you a statist. If you think that time is the source of value, then you are a Marxist.
