Life in These United States

A story passed on  from an excavator over coffee next to the backhoe.

“Two guys I know were planning some easy pickings for thefts at a show coming up at the convention center in Portland.”

I nodded and took another hit of the hot black Dunkin Donuts nectar.

“An older family member told them it might be a bad idea.”

I am always glad to hear responsible adults still exist.

“Turns out it is the annual gun and knife show.”

I laugh out loud.

Back to the Future…

At one point in my varied professional journey, I found myself in a little known training session in northern New Jersey on the operation of persuasion. Joining me were an odd collection of clearly Washington DC apparatchiks all of who claimed to be from agencies they seemed to know little about, along with private sector consultants, senior sales executives, a television evangelist, a hedge fund manager and two mercenaries from a top drawer outfit.

The instructor was a man of small stature who proved to be the most dangerous person I have ever met.  He captured the oxygen in any room he entered and doled out just enough so you would pay attention to his every word and movement.

We proceeded over our time to become aware of … Continue reading

A New Hope

This drew my attention and brought back the America versus true conservative nonsense from the past on some other site.

Ah, the arguments of  the need to maintain manufacturing and resources as a nation versus the free trade unicorns…

A superpower needs to be capable of making anything it needs to survive and thrive or it either becomes a tyrant empire or a colony of the next superpower.

There are some things a national government should do, and one is maintain capacity for making war and sustaining power. When we allow fabrication assets to be shut down by material manipulation and sold to strategic competitors at cents on the dollar, I find the free trade mantra to ring quite hollow.

When we create resource … Continue reading

The Main Street Economy

The year is ending in a big flurry of economic activity, the main street kind. The learned elites sense it from retail sales, but there is more tangible stuff going on.

I just helped a client buy a new commercial van. The dealers are selling out of inventory and are scrambling as businesses rush to replace aging fleets. I had to give an order to a dealer across a mountain range to get the model   needed, as all others were sold out.

Housing and commercial extension  new construction is hitting a pace not seen in decades. Wages are rising for skilled labor.

The halfway house for felons are having no trouble finding jobs these days. All they have to do is show up sober and work is … Continue reading

A Question for the Tribe

I watched a good bit of the Pensacola Rally that POTUS led.  I remember the debates during the campaign on how the rallies would have to stop if he got elected, how politics was not done that way anymore and so forth.

I am curious to hear from my compatriot BDBers on their opinion of the significance or lack thereof of the rally, why it was done and what effect it had.

My reaction:

The messages he wanted to send was one of relaxed fun. He is clearly having fun doing the job, he is in a good mood and showing anyone who watched that joining his side is more fun that the resistance. He has good news, things are moving the right way and the other side … Continue reading

Curmudgeon Musings on the Unfolding Scene…

Some musings on the unfolding civil war…

My read of Trump is he understands timing of his moves. He needs the tax cut and he needs the year end funding silliness to be done with before he can act and take a political risk.

It sure sounds like he has been building up some countermoves to Mueller and the ‘resistance’.  He also knows he has to set the stage for everyone’s Christmas season.

I expect a slow and small series of counter moves to keep the media off balance , to get past the Alabama election, to get the tax bill signed into law and … Continue reading

Realpolitic versus Personal Destruction

It seems to be coming down to this…

POTUS is betting on a roaring economy which he will tie to his policies of reduced immigration, better trade deals, America First, cutting regulation and tax cuts for people and corporations.

The Progressives are counting on voters ignoring economics and personal wealth and placing diversity and social justice as the driving factors.

It seems even the dimwitted GOP  Senate has a glimmering of which one is the winning hand.

Trump has jobs and the flag, the Progs have the Media and Mueller.

If the Dems had a brain, they would accelerate the economy by joining in, such that by 2020 everyone feels well off and would assume the economy is fixed. Then they can turn to the important stuff like … Continue reading
