For those of you w/o keys to caf:

“I like to have fun with the kids when they come around. I gave out Ramen Noodles two years ago, the year before that individual potatoes (“Maybe you don’t think it’s a treat, but I’ll bet your dad does”). Another year it was individual cloves of garlic: Me: “It’ll keep the vampires away.” One kid: “I am a vampire!” My best so far was the year I got some single servings of sauerkraut. Oh yeah, it’s fun.”

Yeah, that was funny. Seems like it’s been a long time since Halloween treats could be homemade. People have been scared for a long time.

I’m sure ya’ll realize that the razor blade thing was a hoax. I need to research that, tho.

yeah. that’s what some spoilsport over the caf says. And that it’s a candy company conspiracy. I say it’s parents. “Let me check out the candy; make sure it’s safe. . .”

Growing up a child of the 1950s, many of the families were parents who lived through the Depression, the rationing of WW2 and were one generation off the family farm. Eating out was still rare and homemade treats for Halloween were common.

I remember the first ‘razor blades in Apples’, back when men still used razor blades. The scare was horrifying to parents who were grappling with images of nuclear war and pictures of concentration camps.

A basic trust in the goodness of human nature in American culture had bee lost by 1945.
