If government will not defend our civilization -- lives, letters, and graves -- then society must, despite having constituted a government for exactly that task.
Senator John McCain has not always been on my side, but I am on his side in his fight against cancer. I wish the great man well, and if he cannot be well, then I wish him comfort.
Easy, I didn’t mean John and Ms. South Carolina ’53 should shuffle off this mortal coil together, merely that they should join hands and depart the public stage. That is, they should enjoy each other’s company in anonymity, not necessarily oblivion — though we all end up there eventually.
He is far from my way of thinking, but I have seen my father in law go, many aunts and uncles, it tried for my wife and son in law. His enemy is mine. May he win this fight.
I see both Barry Obama and Donald Trump wished McCain well after this diagnosis became public, which I think speaks well of both of them.
McCain- just as I expect- nastily attacked Trump’s decision to cease arming Al-Qaeda in Syria, and promised to resume his deranged nevertrumping once he returns to the Senate.
Well. I must say, I have nothing good to say about McCain and I have no good wishes for him, either.
The policies he has advocated have resulted in myriad deaths in this country at the hands of the people McCain says do the jobs American just won’t do, even though Americans actually do most of those jobs, even now. The fate of those Americans- and the people murdered by McCain’s illegal immigrant friends- trouble McCain not at all.
I note also that McCain is deeply desirous that the US continue to arm Al-Qaeda in Syria to overthrow a regime that McCain didn’t care about when said regime was helping to kill American soldiers during the Iraq War. Again, McCain WANTS TO ARM AL-QAEDA BECAUSE HE WANTS TO ARM THE TERRORISTS WHO DID THE 9/11 ATTACK BECAUSE WHAT THE FUQ IS WRONG WITH YOU OLD MAN.
But wait, there’s more, not that there needs to be. I still remember 2000, when McCain was sending campaign fundraising letters to democrats I knew but not Republicans. I remember all the stories about McCain threatening to switch parties, averted only because circumstances outside McCain’s control made it pointless for him to do so.
In short, McCain is a despicable human being, a backstabbing traitor who has been betraying the Republicans who have loyally supported the GOP since at least the 2000 presidential campaign.
Now I know all about his time in the POW camp, etc, and I have also known people who died from terrible diseases. Alas, I have watched one them spend months dieing in agony. That sort of thing is an ugly fact of life, unfortunately.
But I just can’t be moved to sympathy for McCain, after all he’s done and said. The best I can do is to wish he never returns to the Senate, and spends his last days regretting his prior conduct.
Quite the rant. Did you get redacted over at the caf?
The best I can do is to wish he never returns to the Senate, and spends his last days regretting his prior conduct.
I’ve heard that he is going to keep his seat. Like Teddy.
OK: here are 3 anecdotes: Acquaintance traveling in DC gets in to see the senator. Talks to senator about representing the state of AZ and the senator’s voting record not reflecting that. Senator sez: I have to vote my conscience.
A patient had a brother on a ship during the Vietnam war. McCain strafed said ship and has denied it for forever.
Flying to DC, sitting next to a White Mtn Apache woman. Sez she: McCain is the devil’s spawn (Kyl was a good guy).
“Quite the rant. Did you get redacted over at the caf?”
I don’t know what you’re referring to, actually, although I admit this was a rant. I just don’t like McCain, and long experience has taught me that nice gestures aimed at these folks is rewarded with nothing better than a finger jammed in your eye.
Certainly, he’ll keep the Senate seat until he dies. A Trump supporter wound be expelled lickety split, first day after their diagnosis- and the press would be shrieking that should they should have resigned immediately, as well.
I like to think of the ‘caf’ as the vanity publisher of the Internet: for the price of a Grande Caffè Latte at the flagship Starbucks in Seattle you can join the scrum. But if you really want to yammer — like Reagan and Thatcher at a G7 meeting — that’ll set you back to the tune of a couple of Paul Ryan autograph bottles of Pinot noir at Bistro Bis.
VtM, et al, This kind of comment [23 July 2017, 0141] makes me reluctant to participate more here; sour grapes aren’t quite to my taste…That said, do continue. To each h/h own. See yunz on another thread. :-)
Aye!
Comfort would be good. Exiting the Senate would also be good.
And taking Lindsey chubby cheeks with him would be double good.
What? Like glioblastoma is contagious?

Huh? What? Yikes!
May he retire promptly with dignity and be called home in peace.
Wishing him the best medical care – and we do after all have the best here – and his loving family, and God’s grace, to support him.
Certainly for Senators.
He is far from my way of thinking, but I have seen my father in law go, many aunts and uncles, it tried for my wife and son in law. His enemy is mine. May he win this fight.
Wishing him well, healing and care, if not cure; bless him and those who hold him dear.

I’ve no issue with this rant.
This says what a lot of us are thinking.

Yes. In spades. McCain/Feingold, after all.

Don’t go Nanda, I’ll behave myself. But is it OK if I still rag on Squeaker of the House, Paul Ryan?
