Obama's Bad Week ^H^H^H Month Gets Worse: Executive Privilege for Holder a Trap

Oh, man, this is great:

President Obama has granted an 11th-hour request by Attorney General Eric Holder to exert executive privilege over Fast and Furious documents, a last-minute maneuver that appears unlikely to head off a contempt vote against Holder by Republicans in the House.

This is like Tea Party Christmas.  Obama just opened the door to impeachment. At a minimum, this gives Congress the opportunity to examine Obama’s use of Executive Privilege, which should prove rewarding. This is not any victory for the Marxists in the White House. This is a large chunk crashing down in the collapse of the administration!

Boehner is smart but weak — but this is the only time he has been hitched to Issa instead of McConnell.  Well, maybe he’s … Continue reading

The Shape of Things To Come

Facts will matter less in the future, and we should prepare to win in that age.

These days, it is increasingly simple for people to back up whatever opinion they have with facts from a variety of sources.   If I wish to claim that a certain tax scheme is right and good, I am likely to bolster my claim with numbers from somewhere.  After all, utilitarian arguments such as “does it work?” should not be unwelcome in a public policy discussion.   Some facts are sought for and others are generated, while still others simply fall as if from the sky into a person’s awareness.  Such is the nature of our “one point five way” communications environment.

I can access a wealth of hard data from the … Continue reading

The Case Against Abortion: Prenatal Development

This is a great resource, informative and crisp, illustrating the fetal development timeline.

There has long been a common misperception that most abortions occur before the embryo or fetus is recognizably human. Day after day, thousands of aborting women wrongly believe that they’re simply eliminating some undifferentiated human cell tissue. Because the general ignorance of prenatal development is so convenient to the abortion industry, it’s not hard to guess why Planned Parenthood does so little to accurately educate their clients. Of course, even if human embryos didn’t become so recognizably human in such a short amount of time, would that somehow change the ethics of abortion? Afterall, isn’t it the height of injustice to abuse another member of the human community simply because they don’t look the way … Continue reading

Social Security Invades the Family, 1939

I am trying to educate myself on some of these things, in a detailed way.  I am seeking clarity on bouncaries, and I think I found the source of problems with Social Security.  If we allow for the fact that the government is going to run a safety net, and we wish to choose between good approaches and bad, then the following paragrpah from the SSA website shows the difference to me:

The original Act provided only retirement benefits, and only to the worker. The 1939 Amendments made a fundamental change in the Social Security program. The Amendments added two new categories of benefits: payments to the spouse and minor children of a retired worker (so-called dependents benefits) and survivors benefits paid to the family in the event … Continue reading
