Not everything works right around here. Still, pretty happy with the blooming thing running at all with the neglect that this site has seen. So, a temporary maintenance post stuck to the top for a while.

What works:

  • User posts
  • User comments
  • Chat

Not working (or not working right)

  • Join (new account creation) — I have this suppressed.  Mail for a workaround.
  • Rotating Tweets (over on the sidebar Twitter thing) — working on that.
  • Forums.  After struggling to get these things self-regulating (I wanted to hand control of individual forums to the forum admins), the primary use case evaporated.  I got rid of the forums.  There are still some stumps poking up that I’m afraid to get rid of until the user perms and roles are solid (forums capability was very intrusive into that process, and now what’s left is a mix, sigh).
  • USER PERMISSION LEVELS — so far no problems, but there’s wreckage leftover from forums.  It’s just hard to validate things, to account completely for things that should not be left to chance.   I’m being careful with this.

To-Do “soon”:

  • Tighten up user permissions, identities, roles; without bumping anybody or severing their permissions.  This is tough.  Will take time, but is a priority.
  • Send a “heartbeat” email (a one-off) to users just to indicate the blog is somewhat active again.
  • Fix the Twitter problem — The old plug-in has been abalndoned by its creators, as Twitter has changed the way their API can be accessed.  There are some low-satisfaction “solutions” available, but I’m looking for better. 
  • In-progress — chewing 18K bogus users down to nothing.  Why not simply delete all new?  Because there may be valid users in there.  And I just don;t want to turn anybody away for having tried to come in the right way.  This is a lot of work.
  • Create a “child theme,” which is a sustainable way to maintain customizations.  Right now, this site is presenting an out-of-the-box color scheme and layout.  It’s not bad.  But it isn’t — you know — Boss.
