POLICY BOARD SHIFT<\/a><\/p>\n
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta this week moved to replace key members of the Defense Policy Board, the advisory group of former officials that serves as a brain trust.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe made it more \u2018Democratic,\u2019\u201d one board member quipped about the changes.<\/p>\n
Liberals added to the board include former Clinton administration Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, former Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick, retired Marine Corps Gen. James Cartwright and Jane Harman, a former Democratic congresswoman from California. Also added: former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead.<\/p>\n
Most notable among the new members is Ms. Gorelick, who was notorious for erecting the so-called bureaucratic \u201cwall\u201d blocking law enforcement and intelligence agencies from cooperating closely before the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The 9\/11 Commission blamed the wall as a contributing factor to the failure to stop the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n
Conservatives no longer on the board include Andrew Krepinevich of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, Reagan-era Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Fred Ikle, and retired Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I had hoped that the Panetta tenure would work out better than this. The fact that we have just brought on Gorelick while cashing out General Pace tells us what we need to know.<\/p>\n
Next ominous sign to watch for: DHS\/Defense “interoperability” measures. These will be the sorts of things which make sense from a bean-counting and bureaucratic point of view, and which will be undertaken by well-intended individuals who see efficiency as the prime benefit, but which will blow away firewalls designed to protect our freedoms.<\/p>\n
