A simple discharge is too good for him. We cannot run a military if administrative matters are eligible for review at every level of the chain of command. If an enlisted man is ordered to mow down unarmed civilians, he has a duty to rebut, to refuse, and to actively resist that order. “I was only following orders” is not an acceptable defense in cases where the order is unlawful because of (off the top of my head) immediate, identifiable, and irreversible adverse consequences of its being followed.

However, this rationale gives absolutely zero protection to those members of the armed forces who will weigh and debate their orders for political reasons, and who even — if they have a decent case — cannot prove immediate, identifiable, irrevocable consequences of following the order. In the case of military members following the orders of the President, when the entire chain of command has weighed in and accepted the prevailing conditions as not warranting contrary action, then refusals such as this are simple mutiny, either of a political or a cowardly type.

There is a right way to do this, and it involves a lot of sacrifice. If you have a serious objection as a commissioned officer, you work this all the way up your chain, one step at a time. If you are serious, you will keep on fighting even at great personal cost. Anything less is simple political opportunism or cowardice. That’s more sacrifice than I have seen from any of these grandstanding fools, all the way back to 1Lt Ehren Watada, who was (I believe) the first in the recent bunch to take a public political stand in uniform. He refused orders to deploy with the men who served under him, and I argued that he was well within range of conviction and execution. He was quietly pumped out instead, and now we cannot seem to stamp out this thread of political activity from the active duty side.

The recent recognition or granting of Conscientious Objector status to a muslim soldier who declared that he could not fight against muslims was wrong. The truth of this was demonstrated when that same soldier attempted to repeat the Fort Hood massacre. If 1Lt Watada had been dealt with in a forthright manner, we would now have the tools available to deal with our morally crumbling force. If you want to know what’s wrong with the military, look no further than the kid-glove treatment afforded to those who fail to uphold their oaths.

There is neither bravery nor patriotism nor honor in opposing the Commander-in-Chief from within ranks. Service in the military is a sacred honor, and it is not for everyone.

[dc]Y[/dc]ou need a lot more justification than this:

A service member who refused to report to duty earlier this month because he doubted President Barack Obama’s citizenship is to be discharged from the Air Force, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Staff Sgt.
