While anything is possible, this “prognostic reasoning” from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center is alarming:<\/p>\n

MODEL GUIDANCE IN THE EXTENDED TAUS HAS REMAINED VERY CONSISTENT OVER THE PAST 2 DAYS IN REGARDS TO THE TRACK AND TRACK SPEEDS. DUE TO THE LACK OF A STRONG MIDLATITUDE SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND WESTERLIES, THE RE-CURVE IS UNUSUAL IN THAT THE SYSTEM WILL TRACK AT RELATIVELY SLOW SPEEDS (10-14 KNOTS), MAINTAIN TYPHOON INTENSITY STRENGTH PAST TOKYO; AND LACK SIGNIFICANT BAROCLINIC INTERACTION UNTIL IT MOVES EAST OF TOKYO.<\/p>\n

Translation: No standing rain line means this typhoon will not be “scooted off to the east” like most are. It will also not be weakened by the wind shear associated with said scooting. It will be weakened only by dry air and cooler water, none of which have the typhoon-shredding effects of the usual shear. It will therefore remain unusually strong for this are, and will move slowly, which means it dumps rain for longer than usual.
\nThis could be a very bad one for the big island.<\/p>\n

That said, so far it looks as though disaster-wracked Tohoku may be spared the more typhoonish aspects of this storm. Hope so.<\/p>\n

These clouds outside didn’t just roll up. They rolled up, gunned the engine, shut off the car, pulled out bats from behind the seat and started walking this way. Mean-looking clouds.<\/p>\n

We shouldn’t get typhooned too hard, but I think we will see unusual amounts of rain from this. CPA is 0800 on Thursday morning (late Wednesday States time), about 90 miles away, but it’s supposed to stay strong and move slowly. Usually they’re falling apart and being swept to the east in this neighborhood.<\/p>\n
