Like in Berlin for Christ’s sake.
Really, I don’t have much to say about this sorry speech from this sorry man. He incorrectly frames the overriding debate over immigration as one of “who is and who isn’t allowed to come to this country,” when in fact it is about how people will come to this country, it was settled long ago as it is now a matter of law, and the problem is that the laws are not enforced.
Acknowledging that, however, would force the Democrats to address this as a procedural issue, rather than a racial one, and that is their home. It’s those racist recession reactionary Republicans to blame, not decades of pathetic enforcement of laws long on the books, and Democrats’ sabotage of our national security.
Republicans are not congenitally averse to immigration reform; God knows it’s broken now. But we’re not going to give ground, when we’re still waiting for Democrat promises to Reagan to be kept.
The president goes back and forth between admitting that there are legitimate issues which cause legislation on immigration not to go forward, and chalking it up to the tragedy of “the usual Washington games”. He pulls off a sandwich of “illegal” between occurrences of “undocumented”, and swaps the words “rules” and “laws” a few times. He then explains how many folks “just” broke the “rules” in being “undocumented”, when what he should say is that millions of illegals break the law repeatedly and with impunity.
He cites economic hard times as one of the things making reactionaries so opposed to slowing the flood of illegals, but then says we need more workers for the economy. Not with book unemployment at NINE PERCENT, we don’t, and he’s to blame for the crap economy at any rate. We need a great many things, but right now, but more competition for the jobs destroyed by this bumbling administration we certainly do not need. He says it is “an economic imperative,” but for whom? If we can’t drill our way out of oil dependence because it doesn’t work fast enough (and never works only if we never start), then how are we supposed to improve employment figures by increasing the ranks of the unemployed? He spins a lot of high-flying crap out diversity and Einstein etc, but he has no business aiming his destructive gaze past his airborne nose to a point twenty or thirty years down the road when he is doing such a miserable job in the here and now. The only things he’s focused on jobs, jobs, jobs is a damned death-ray.
He goes on to describe how when we educate the world’s best minds (because their own universities are still crap compared to our insitutions of higher indoctrination) we need to convince them to stay here, as he does not want “the next Intel or the next Google to be created in China or India. We want those companies and jobs to take root here.” He cites Bill Gates as a great example of a forward-thining man who wants to hire from overseas. Excuse me, but how is this different from the fatcats seeking to protect their own bottom line by hiring discount skilled labor from abroad, screwing the little guy here in the States and at any rate, perpetrating the (yawn) ongoing brain drain from the developing world through hegemonic American’s cultural imperialism.
The president convinced exactly nobody with his rhetoric about the border and the border towns being more secure or safer now than a couple of years ago. Obviously not, with headlines that show our border with Mexico to be more dangerous than Afghanistan, and only slightly less safe than Washington DC, that other stronghold of weakness. What’s more, the cat was let out of the bag a month or more ago. Border Patrol officers have been under guidance to reduce the number of arrests made; which certainly has the effect of reducing the number of arrests made, but it does not actually solve any problem.
This administration from the border to the money supply has made a practice of ignoring the fundamentals and directly manipulating the indicators. Printing money does not create wealth any more than granting amnesty reduces unemployment.
He sank as he always does into a pedantic lecturing style to describe the history of the honest and hard-working immigrant, and the wicked racist Republicans who oppose them. He lies that his administration has carried out every requirement (not true) from the 2007 “Shamnesty” attempt, that the fence is “basically” complete (not true) and that the Republicans are moving the goalposts (not true) by (presumably) boosting “requests” from tripling to quadrupling the Border Patrol, that we want a “moat”, perhaps filled with live alligators. Nowhere in this does he mention the legislative trickery which cancelled huge sections of the fence agreed to in 2007. Nowhere does he mention that President Reagan help up his end of the bargain but that we are still waiting for the other shoe to drop from the 1986 amnesty. So there are lies of speech and lies of silence, and this president and his teleprompter are all over them.
Well, between the chants of “Yes, we can!” and shouts of “They’re [Republicans are] racist,” “tear it [the fence] down”, this first campaign speech of 2012 managed to hit most of the notes from four years ago or so, and as the loathsome George Lucas might say, it rhymes with his comments given in Berlin while running for the Presidency of the United States.
The president was not speaking to Americans at all. He knows he has Democrats, he knows he’ll never have Republicans, and he needs a tool to bludgeon us with to gain the middle. He is firing up his base in Mexico, where the president of that country joins lawsuits filed by the Justice Department of this country against a state which tries to protect its territorial integrity against a drug-financed violent invasion from across an invisible border. And if you ever wondered where you had hear the name fo Eric Holder before he was a member of this president;s cabinet, before he represented Guantanamo detainees out of his own pocket, perhaps this will ring a bell:

An Eric Holder Joint

That’s right.
