{"id":3114,"date":"2017-05-26T23:56:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T14:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/balldiamondball.com\/blog\/?p=3114"},"modified":"2017-07-06T17:44:40","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T08:44:40","slug":"holding-the-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/balldiamondball.com\/blog\/holding-the-line\/","title":{"rendered":"Holding The Line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Talking with Nanda last night got me thinking about something she said. \u00a0It is unfair that such a small number of our nation stand guard for all.<\/p>\n<p>The military services will argue that the &#8220;new&#8221; all-volunteer military is a great boon. \u00a0Some of this is probably just &#8220;supporting the boss.&#8221; \u00a0The congress has decreed that we will have an all-volunteer force, so it is the law of the land.<\/p>\n<p>Some of this may just be that the services are happier to have people who wish to be there. \u00a0Training a dedicated force usually works more cohesively, more efficiently, and projects more power.<\/p>\n<p>There are also &#8220;observations&#8221; that the nation has gotten soft, that it won&#8217;t fight, etc. \u00a0Perhaps. \u00a0But I have noted in reading that it seems a universal characteristic of Americans that they <em>never<\/em> want to fight &#8212; and only come out to fight when it&#8217;s absolutely necessary. \u00a0We may be ferocious when we fight, but we aren&#8217;t spring-loaded in the fight mode.<\/p>\n<p>So why don&#8217;t we go back to universal service? \u00a0One issue is certainly political. \u00a0Much of the left would scream and holler about being &#8220;forced&#8221; to defend their nation. \u00a0These are the same hypocrites who are against personal gun ownership and concealed carry of weapons, while maintaining armed guards for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>But another difficulty in a return to universal service might be money. \u00a0It would take a significant amount of money to go back to training and keeping some form of military readiness. \u00a0I am not certain the services would be happy with the uncertainty of budget.
