[pullquote]bad ideas and their champions do not advance to the next round[\/pullquote]How hard would that have been? \u00a0Huge benefit, low drawback, but the drawbacks were too much for him. \u00a0You don\u2019t get to extol the virtues of the laboratories of democracy and then insist that what has not worked for one of the states should also be implemented in Washington. \u00a0Part of the whole \u201c50 labs of democracy\u201d is that the bad ideas, and most notably their champions, do not advance to the next round.<\/p>\n

The problem with this is that while true, it is not a winning platform. It\u2019s just a plank and it\u2019s a good one, but so what? \u00a0It’s not enough to make a platform, and it’s all he will be remembered for.<\/p>\n
His defense of RomneyCare is partly rooted in a genuine belief that it is the right answer, at least for Massachusetts, and partly from the conviction that an attempt to walk it back like Mitch Daniels did with \u201cCap & Trade\u201d simply would not fly. This is unfortunate, and it is exactly the sort of timid foot-dragging and risk aversion which plagues the GOP, at the expense of the Tea Party.<\/p>\n
